Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL)

Nutrient and sediment loading of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed will be set by EPA and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection by the fall of 2010. A public hearing was held in Martinsburg on November 4th. 2009 which layed out the issues and steps to be taken over the next year. That presentation and other information are available through a the Chesapeake Bay TMDL Website. A second source for state updates is the West Virginia Conservation Agency

Here are some facts related to West Virginia’s contribution to the issue:


*14% West Virginia’s land mass is within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (2,294,349 acres)


*This contributes 3% of the nitrogen and 4 % of the phosphorous loading to the Bay


*It has been determined through modeling that the Chesapeake Bay can handle 200 million pounds of Nitrogen per years and 15 million pounds of Phosphorous per year.

* EPA TMDL goals to be reached by 2025 would limit Nitrogen loading to 5.71 million pounds (2.88%) and .62 million pounds of Phosphorous (4.18%).

* The major sources of West Virginia’s nitrogen are Agriculture (64%), Urban Areas (10%) and Waste Water Treatment Plants (5%).

* The major sources of West Virginia’s phosphorous are Agriculture (53%), Waste Water Treatment Plants (21%) and Urban Areas (7%).

* Sediment is also a concern and TMDL’s goals have not been set for sediment at this time

The Bay Barometer is an annual report that provides an overview of the health of the bay and indicators that show improvements or declines in many factors. An Executive Order 13508 Draft Strategy for Protecting and Restoring the Chesapeake Bay has been written.

Many of us have problems with wildlife as we encroach on their habitat. This website provides volumes of information on the biology, management and control of wildlife that becomes a pest.

Soil Sample Submission Form

Use this form to submit a sample for testing at the WVU Soil Testing Lab in Morgantown, WV. This form requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, a free computer program, to be printed.The analysis for pH, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, and magnesium is free. The only cost is postage to mail the sample. The address is: *WVU Soil Testing Laboratory, Agricultural Sciences Building, P.O. Box 6108, Morgantown, WV, 26506-6108.

A recommendation for lime, nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium is provided. Results will be returned to you in two to three weeks.

To create a representative sample of the area of interest, take 10 to 20 individual samples, combine them in one container, mix them and let the soil dry. Then pull a subsample from the soil collected and fill a sandwich bag. Mail the sandwich bag and the completed form to the address on the form.

Jefferson County is one of the most diversified counties in its production of agricultural products in West Virginia. The Extension Program emphasizes the support of more traditional agricultural enterprises such as beef, dairy, swine, crop production, farm management, and marketing. Commercial production of small and tree fruits is supported through the WVU Experiment Farm just west of Kearneysville on Rt. 9.

Through the WVU Extension Office here in Jefferson County, many questions related to home horticulture, including insect and disease problems, are answered. An annual publication distributed throughout the county is the Garden Calendar. Soil testing is also available at only the cost of postage. You are encouraged to contact us!

Over 160 Instructional Videos Available

For the several years, presentations made at seminars and workshops have been recorded, edited, and produced so that these unique presentations may be seen by others who did not attend the events. The series of presentations has grown to more than 120 on subjects ranging from row crops to vegetables; from making bio diesel to running a pickup on wood. There are presentations on how to make $90,000 on an acre legally and how you can make better decisions to manage your forage or beef production. Each presentation is self-contained. These presentations have been viewed more than 550 times and embedded in another Web page or forwarded to someone else more than 750 times. Just click here to start exploring.
